Doing my best to do my worst
Edinburgh, Spring 2003
“Do
your best” – that’s what they always told me,
“Do
your best and you’ll be OK.”
Trouble
was, I was always doing my best
Among
people doing their best
And
in the end
My
best was never best enough.
Even
now I’m caught among people
Who
are doing their best
And
will continue to do their best
Til
the day that they die
Even
though, like me,
They
know their best will never be best enough.
Looking
at them, I don’t think it’s best
To
do my best anymore.
I
think it’s best to do my worst.
At
least then my worst will never be as worse
As
the person
Who’s
best at being worst.
If
I do my worst then all the people
Who’ve
only ever seen me doing my best
Will
finally get to see ME
And
those who’ve always told me to do my best
Will
realise
That
doing my worst brings out the best in me.
